How Air Fresheners Work
Air fresheners — whether sprays, plug-ins, reed diffusers or scented candles — work by introducing a stronger, more pleasant smell into the air that competes with or masks the odour you want to hide. Some also contain cyclodextrin, a molecule that encapsulates odour compounds and temporarily prevents them from reaching the nose.
Critically, air fresheners do not chemically alter or destroy the molecules causing the odour. The underlying odour compounds remain in the air and embedded in surfaces. As soon as the masking fragrance disperses — typically within hours — the underlying smell returns.
Why Air Fresheners Fall Short for Property Odour
