The Real Reason Your Flat Still Smells
If you have cleaned a property thoroughly and it still smells, the explanation is almost always the same: the odour compounds are not on the surfaces — they are inside them.
When someone smokes, keeps pets, cooks regularly with strong spices or allows mould to develop, the resulting odour compounds are released as microscopic particles into the air. These particles settle on every surface they reach and, over time, penetrate into porous materials: wall paint, plaster, carpet backing, timber, curtain fabrics and ceiling tiles.
Cleaning removes what is on the surface — visible dirt, dust and some surface residue. It cannot reach the compounds that have been absorbed into the material itself. As the property warms up, these embedded compounds off-gas back into the air. This is why a flat that seems clean and freshly painted can still smell noticeably of smoke, pets or cooking.
Which Odours Are Hardest to Remove by Cleaning Alone
- Cigarette and tobacco smoke: Nicotine and tar penetrate several millimetres into plaster and timber. Standard cleaning and even repainting (without a stain-blocking primer) will not seal it in permanently — it bleeds through as the room warms.
- Pet urine: Uric acid crystals embedded in carpet backing and subfloor continue to release odour indefinitely, especially in humidity. No amount of surface carpet cleaning reaches these deposits.
- Curry and strong spice odours: Aromatic spice compounds bond strongly with porous materials and persist long after cooking has stopped.
- Mould (MVOC compounds): Mould metabolic by-products penetrate wall surfaces and are released continuously as long as any mould colony — including subsurface hyphae — remains active.
- General long-term habitation odour: Body oils, cooking residue and general occupation smell build up over time and embed in soft furnishings, carpets and wall surfaces.
Why DIY Methods Fall Short
The most common sequence is: deep clean, repaint, ventilate, use air fresheners — and the smell is still there, especially when the flat is warm. Here is why each step has limits:
- Deep cleaning: Addresses surface residue. Cannot reach embedded compounds in wall paint, plaster or carpet backing.
- Repainting: Temporarily seals some surface odour. Without a specialist stain-blocking primer applied after thorough chemical cleaning, tobacco and mould compounds bleed through standard emulsion paint within weeks.
- Ventilation: Reduces airborne concentration. Does nothing to address embedded residue, which continues to off-gas as soon as windows are closed.
- Air fresheners: Mask the smell for hours to days. The underlying odour returns as soon as the masking agent disperses.
- Consumer ozone machines: Some improvement for light odour. Consumer-grade output is insufficient for established contamination, and without surface treatment first, the embedded residue continues to off-gas.
The pattern that indicates you need professional treatment: You clean thoroughly, the smell improves temporarily, but it returns — particularly on warm days or when the heating is on. This is the classic signature of embedded odour compounds off-gassing from inside wall and floor materials.
What Actually Works
