Why Cigarette Smell Is So Persistent

• Bicarbonate of soda: Absorbs some airborne odour molecules. No effect on embedded residue.
• Repainting walls: Seals surface nicotine temporarily. If the underlying residue is heavy, it will bleed through standard emulsion within weeks. Requires specialist stain-blocking primer.
• Professional carpet cleaning: Removes surface and near-surface residue from carpet fibres. May not reach carpet backing where residue is embedded.
• Consumer ozone machines: Some improvement for light odour. Output is a fraction of professional equipment; cannot verify effective concentration was reached.

The Limits of DIY

The honest answer is that DIY methods are unlikely to permanently eliminate established cigarette smell from a flat that has been smoked in regularly over months or years. The reason is straightforward: the residue is in the walls, not just on them.

The most common experience is: clean the flat thoroughly, repaint, let it air for a few weeks — and the smell returns when the weather warms up. This is the embedded residue off-gassing as temperatures rise. No amount of surface cleaning addresses this.
