Dust on Radiators: The Harmless Cause
The most common and least concerning reason for heating smell is dust burning off the surfaces of radiators and heating elements at the start of the heating season. Over summer, dust accumulates on the top and back of radiators, on skirting heating elements, and on any surface near heat sources. When the heating first comes on, this dust gets warm, releases organic compounds into the air, and produces a distinctive slightly acrid, dusty smell.
How to identify this cause: the smell appears only when the heating first comes on after a period of non-use; it is strongest in the first 30–60 minutes; it gradually reduces and largely disappears within 1–2 heating cycles; it recurs mildly at the start of each season but not during daily use.
Fix: vacuum the tops, backs and surrounds of all radiators before the first use of the season. Wipe the radiator surfaces with a damp cloth. This is the single most effective action for seasonal heating smell and takes 15 minutes.
Embedded Compounds Released by Heat
Heat dramatically accelerates the off-gassing of volatile compounds from surfaces. If the property has embedded odour compounds — from previous smoking, pet urine, mould, or cooking — that are tolerable at room temperature, the increase in temperature when the heating runs can push the off-gassing rate significantly higher, producing a noticeable smell that was not apparent in cooler conditions.
This is one of the most important diagnostic mechanisms for hidden odour problems. A property that seems odour-free in the summer viewings but smells strongly when new occupants first switch the heating on in autumn is a classic pattern of previous-tenant contamination — cigarette smoke, pet odour or long-term habitation compounds that were embedded in the surfaces but not releasing enough at ambient temperature to be noticeable.
The same mechanism applies in the opposite direction: a property that smells noticeably worse in summer than in winter has embedded compounds that are being released faster by the higher ambient temperatures.
Cigarette and Pet Smell Getting Worse With Heating
Two specific embedded compounds are particularly heat-sensitive:
- Nicotine and tar from cigarette smoke: These compounds embedded in walls, ceilings and carpet increase their off-gassing rate significantly with temperature. A property with moderate cigarette smell contamination may be barely noticeable at 16°C and strongly noticeable at 22°C. The temperature difference between a cold flat in October and a heated flat in November can be the difference between “I can live with this” and “I need to do something about this.”
- Uric acid from pet urine: When the room temperature rises, uric acid crystals in carpet and flooring increase their off-gassing rate. This is why a room with pet urine history can smell tolerable in summer (with windows open, ambient cooling) and much worse in autumn when the heating comes on and windows stay closed.
Mould Near or In the Heating System
In properties with warm air heating systems, mould growing in or near the ductwork can produce smell that is distributed throughout the property every time the system runs. This is less common in the UK (where radiator-based central heating is standard) but relevant for fan convector heaters, storage heaters in poor condition, and properties with any form of air circulation system.
Also relevant: mould growing in damp areas near radiators (behind radiators on external walls where condensation occurs, or in corners near heated areas where a damp patch exists) can produce MVOC smell that is more noticeable when the heating is running because the heat circulates the air more actively.
Boiler and Flue Issues
A smell of burning or sulphur that appears specifically when the boiler fires (rather than when the radiators warm up) can indicate a boiler or flue issue:
- A cracked heat exchanger allows combustion gases to enter the heating system
- A partially blocked or incorrectly installed flue allows combustion gases to re-enter the property
- A gas leak (smell of rotten eggs / sulphur) near the boiler or gas pipework
If you smell gas or sulphur from the boiler area: do not use the boiler, open windows, leave the property and call the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This is a safety issue, not just an odour problem. Only resume use after the boiler has been inspected and passed safe by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
New Radiators and New Boilers
Newly installed radiators and boilers typically produce a smell on first use from curing protective coatings and manufacturing residues. This is normal, reduces after 2–4 heating cycles, and does not indicate a problem.
How to Identify Your Cause
When does it happen?
Only on first use of the season → probably dust. Every time the heating runs → embedded compounds or heating system issue. Only when the boiler fires (not just when radiators warm up) → boiler or flue issue.
What does it smell like?
Dusty, slightly acrid → dust on radiators. Musty → mould. Tobacco or pet smell, but stronger than usual → embedded compounds released by heat. Sulphur or rotten eggs → gas issue (emergency, see above).
Does it go away or persist?
Goes away after 30–60 minutes → dust. Persists throughout heating period → embedded compounds or mould. Comes from a specific room → localised source in that room.
Fixes for Each Cause
- Dust on radiators: Vacuum and wipe all radiators before first seasonal use
- Cigarette or pet compounds: Professional fogging and ozone treatment to neutralise embedded compounds in surfaces
- Mould near radiators: Identify and fix moisture source, treat mould with biocide, improve ventilation
- Mould in ductwork: Professional duct cleaning and biocide treatment
- Boiler or flue: Gas Safe engineer inspection immediately
- New equipment: Run at full temperature with windows open for first 2–3 cycles
