Why Vape Smell Lingers in a Room

Vaping produces an aerosol — not vapour in the steam sense, but a fine mist of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, nicotine and flavouring compounds. These particles are smaller than tobacco smoke particles and settle on surfaces throughout a room, including walls, ceilings, soft furnishings, curtains and carpets.

Over time, vape aerosol residue accumulates on surfaces in a similar way to tobacco smoke, though typically at a lower rate and with a different chemical profile. The characteristic sweet or fruity smell of e-liquid flavourings can persist in embedded residue for months after vaping has stopped, particularly in warm conditions when the compounds volatilise back into the air.

Nicotine-containing vapes also deposit nicotine residue on surfaces, which can cause light yellowing over time on white surfaces — though less dramatically than tobacco smoke.

DIY Methods for Vape Smell

💡

Good news: Vape smell is generally easier to treat than tobacco smoke because the compounds are less chemically aggressive and penetrate surfaces less deeply over an equivalent period. For light to moderate vape smell in a well-ventilated property, DIY methods may be sufficient. For a property where vaping has been heavy or prolonged, professional treatment is more reliable.

The Limits of DIY

DIY methods have the same fundamental limitation for vape smell as for any embedded odour: they address what is on the surface but cannot reach compounds absorbed into wall paint, plaster and carpet backing. If the smell returns after cleaning and ventilation — especially on warm days — the residue has penetrated beyond what surface cleaning can address.

For landlords preparing a property for new tenants or for sale, a property that smells of vape on a warm day will be noticed by viewers. Surface cleaning alone is unlikely to guarantee a neutral smell.

Professional Treatment for Vape Smell

Our vape odour treatment combines ULV cold fogging with specialist neutralising solution and monitored ozone treatment. The fogging penetrates curtains, carpets and wall surfaces where vape residue has settled. The ozone stage neutralises the remaining airborne compounds throughout the property.

For vape smell, our Advanced package (from £695 + VAT) is typically sufficient. For heavy vaping over a long tenancy, especially in a property with lots of soft furnishings, the Complete package may be recommended.
