Why Pet Smell Returns After Carpet Cleaning
Carpet is a layered system: pile fibres, primary backing, secondary backing, underlay and then the subfloor. Professional carpet cleaning cleans the pile fibres and the top face of the primary backing. It does not reach the secondary backing, the underlay or anything below it.
Pet smell has multiple sources in carpet, most of which are below the level cleaning reaches:
- Uric acid crystals from urine deposits that have soaked through the pile into the backing and underlay
- Sebaceous oils from pet skin and coat, deposited continuously and worked deeper over time
- Dander (dead skin cells) embedded in the carpet pile
- Bacteria feeding on organic deposits in the backing and underlay
Carpet cleaning removes surface deposits and temporarily reduces the smell. As the carpet dries and returns to room temperature, or as the room warms up, embedded compounds off-gas and the smell returns — sometimes within days of cleaning.
Dog and Cat Dander in Carpet
Both dogs and cats continuously shed dander — microscopic flakes of dead skin carrying their characteristic smell compounds. Over months and years, dander accumulates deep in the carpet pile and backing, well below what a standard vacuum or carpet cleaner reaches. Pet sebaceous oils are similarly persistent and bind to carpet fibres. A carpet with a pet living on it for a year or more will retain pet smell in the backing even after multiple professional cleans.
Urine Deposits: The Key Problem
For most properties where pet carpet smell is serious, urine deposits are the primary cause:
- Urine soaks through pile into primary backing within seconds
- Within minutes, it penetrates into the underlay
- For large or repeated deposits, urine reaches the subfloor or floorboards
- As it dries, uric acid forms crystals that are insoluble in water
- The crystals reactivate every time humidity rises or moisture is introduced
This is why steam cleaning consistently fails: the heat reactivates the crystals and the water rehydrates them, temporarily intensifying the smell.
UV Inspection: Essential First Step
Before any treatment, locate all urine deposits using a UV black light in a darkened room. Dried urine fluoresces with a distinctive yellowish-green glow clearly visible even through apparently clean carpet. UV inspection almost always reveals more deposits than expected — areas never seen as stained frequently show significant deposits. Treating only the obvious spots while leaving hidden ones produces poor results.
UV torches are widely available online for £5–15. Mark all fluorescing areas with chalk or tape before switching the lights on.
The Correct DIY Treatment Sequence
Locate all deposits with UV light
In a darkened room. Mark every fluorescing area. Do not skip this step.
Apply enzyme cleaner to all deposits
Use a product specifically formulated for pet urine with active enzymes. Apply generously — the cleaner must penetrate to the full depth of the deposit. A light spray on the surface does very little for backing deposits.
Cover and allow to dwell 8–24 hours
Cover treated areas with cling film to prevent the cleaner evaporating too quickly. In cool conditions, enzymes work slowly — err on the side of longer dwell time.
Allow to dry completely
Remove the plastic and allow to dry naturally. Do not apply heat. A fan helps. The carpet may feel stiff when dry — this is normal and will soften.
Re-check with UV light and repeat
Once fully dry, check treated areas again. Areas that still fluoresce strongly need repeat treatment. For established deposits, 2–3 rounds are typically needed.

- Reach uric acid deposits in the backing or underlay
- Break down the enzyme structure responsible for urine odour

When You Need More Than Carpet Cleaning
- The smell returns within days or weeks of professional carpet cleaning
- UV inspection shows deposits in multiple areas

- Multiple animals, or one animal over a long period
🔍 Carpet cleaned but the smell came back? This is the clearest sign that the source is in the backing or underlay — not the surface that was cleaned. Professional UV inspection and enzyme treatment goes to the depth where the uric acid crystals actually are.
When to Replace the Underlay
If urine has saturated the underlay significantly, replacing it is the most reliable approach. Signs: strong smell even after multiple enzyme treatments; visible staining on the underlay when a corner is lifted; UV fluorescence remains strong after enzyme treatment.
If the subfloor is also contaminated, seal any contaminated areas with a specialist odour-blocking primer (such as Zinsser BIN) before relaying new underlay and carpet. This prevents the smell from migrating back through new materials.
