Why Cat Urine Smell Is So Persistent
Cat urine smell is notoriously difficult to remove because it is not a single compound. Fresh cat urine contains urea, creatinine, uric acid, electrolytes and various proteins. As it dries, bacteria break down the urea and produce ammonia — the sharp, pungent smell most people recognise. But the compound that causes the most persistent, long-lasting smell is uric acid.
Unlike the other water-soluble components, uric acid forms crystals that are extremely difficult to dissolve. These crystals can remain in carpet fibres, backing, underlay and floorboard timber for years, releasing fresh odour every time the humidity rises, the room warms up, or moisture is applied — which is why cleaning can temporarily make the smell worse.
The Uric Acid Problem: Why It Keeps Coming Back
The typical pattern: carpet is cleaned, the smell improves, then a few weeks later — particularly on a warm day or after the floor gets wet — the smell returns, sometimes stronger than before. Standard cleaning products remove the surface components of urine but do not break down uric acid crystals in the carpet backing or beneath it.
When moisture is reintroduced — whether from steam cleaning, wet cleaning or high humidity — the crystals rehydrate and release fresh odour. This is why steam cleaning is one of the worst things you can do for cat urine odour.
UV inspection: Cat urine is invisible under normal light once dry. A UV black light reveals dried deposits clearly. Before treating for cat urine smell, always use a UV torch in a darkened room to locate all deposits — you will often find far more than expected.
DIY Treatment: What Actually Works
For fresh or recently detected deposits, enzyme-based cleaners are the correct approach. Standard carpet cleaners do not break down uric acid. You need a product specifically designed for pet urine containing active enzymes that digest uric acid.
Locate all deposits with UV light
Use a UV torch (widely available for £5–15) in a darkened room. Mark every fluorescing area. You may find significantly more deposits than expected.
Blot fresh urine immediately
Use paper towels. Press firmly. Do not rub — this spreads the deposit. Work from the outside of the stain inward.
Apply enzyme cleaner generously
Pour liberally onto the deposit. You need enough to penetrate to the full depth of the urine. For a deposit that has soaked through to the backing, use a significant amount. The key mistake is under-applying — a light spray on the surface does nothing for deep deposits.
Cover and allow to dry naturally
Cover with cling film to prevent the cleaner from evaporating too fast. Allow at least 24 hours. Do not rinse quickly — the enzymes need time. In cold conditions, allow longer.
Repeat if necessary
For established deposits, one application is rarely enough. Repeat 2–3 times. Reassess with UV light after each treatment when dry.
Why Steam Cleaning Makes Cat Urine Smell Worse
Never use a steam cleaner on cat urine spots. The heat bonds the proteins in urine permanently to the carpet fibres. The stain and odour become set into the fibre structure and are significantly harder to remove afterwards. This is one of the most common and most damaging DIY mistakes.
Hot water extraction carpet cleaning has the same problem: the combination of heat and water reactivates uric acid crystals and can spread the deposit over a wider area. The exception is cold water extraction combined with enzyme cleaner applied beforehand — always apply enzyme cleaner first, allow to dwell, then extract cold.
Cat Urine in Floorboards: A Different Challenge
When urine penetrates through carpet and underlay into the floorboards beneath, the situation becomes significantly more difficult. Timber is highly porous and uric acid crystals embed into the wood grain. Enzyme cleaners applied through carpet cannot penetrate the backing, underlay and then into the timber in sufficient concentration to be effective.
Signs that urine has reached the floorboards: the smell persists or returns after repeated enzyme treatment; UV light shows heavy deposits in areas that have been cleaned multiple times; the smell is noticeable in a room below.
For floorboards: remove carpet and underlay from the affected area, sand the surface lightly to open the grain, apply enzyme cleaner directly to the bare wood, allow to penetrate, then seal with a specialist odour-blocking sealant (Zinsser BIN or similar) before relaying carpet. Professional treatment is more effective and faster for floorboard contamination.
